**WhatsApp order confirmation is a message sent to the customer right after they place a cash on delivery (COD) order, asking them to confirm it with one tap before you pack and ship it.** The outcome: you only ship orders a real person has confirmed, and Shopify shows you which ones are still unconfirmed.

It is for Shopify stores that lose money on fake orders, wrong numbers and refused deliveries. Cartsaver is a Built for Shopify app by Xtnd that confirms cash on delivery orders on WhatsApp or SMS before you ship, then uses the same WhatsApp conversation for order updates, abandoned cart recovery, one-tap cross-sells, reviews and campaigns, through the official WhatsApp Business API. Inside the app this feature is called **WhatsApp Order Verification**; on this site you will also see it called **WhatsApp order confirmation** or post-checkout confirmation. They are the same thing.

## How does one-tap WhatsApp order confirmation work?

After a customer places a COD order through your normal Shopify checkout, Cartsaver sends them a WhatsApp message with the order details and Confirm and Cancel buttons. One tap on Confirm marks the order verified in Shopify, with tags, so you know it is safe to pack and ship.

The customer uses your normal Shopify checkout. Nothing about checkout changes. The confirmation happens after the order exists:

1. **The customer places a COD order.** Shopify creates the order as usual. Cartsaver adds a *Pending* risk assessment to it with the note “Order confirmation sent via WhatsApp”, so your team can see it is waiting.
2. **Cartsaver sends a WhatsApp message**, immediately or after a delay you choose. It shows the order number, the items, the total, the delivery address and the payment method, with three buttons: **Order Details**, **Confirm** and **Cancel**.
3. **The customer taps Confirm.** No code to copy, no app to switch to. Cartsaver marks the order verified, sets the Shopify risk level back to none, and adds the tags “Contact verified by OTP” and “Verified via WhatsApp”.
4. **You ship confirmed orders.** If you turned on auto-fulfill, the order is fulfilled in Shopify the moment the customer confirms.

On the thank-you page and the order status page, a Cartsaver block tells the customer the confirmation was sent to their WhatsApp. From that block they can resend the message, correct a mistyped phone number, or check whether their confirmation has gone through (it can take up to 60 seconds to show).

## What the video covers

- **0:00 Intro and setup:** turn on verification in the Cartsaver dashboard, choose WhatsApp Order Confirmation, then add the Cartsaver block to the Thank you and Order status pages in the Shopify checkout editor.
- **0:44 Confirmation message settings:** send the message immediately or after a delay you choose, and decide whether confirmed orders are fulfilled automatically.
- **1:05 What happens to unconfirmed orders:** in Pending Order Action, mark them high risk for review or cancel them automatically after a wait of 30 minutes to 24 hours. Additional info adds a line such as your delivery time or working hours.
- **1:31 What the customer sees on WhatsApp:** a message with their order details; they check it and tap Confirm or Cancel.

## Should you use one-tap confirmation or an OTP code?

Use one-tap confirmation after checkout: the order already exists, so you only need a clear yes or no. OTP codes suit checks before an order is created, such as [pre-checkout OTP verification](https://cartsaver.net/help/pre-checkout-otp-verification/) or Fast Checkout, where the customer types a code sent by WhatsApp or SMS.

Cartsaver can verify a customer two ways on WhatsApp: the **Confirmation Template** (one tap on a button) or **Normal OTP** (a 4-digit code the customer types in). SMS codes are the other channel. Here is how they compare for COD orders:

| Method | What the customer does | Best for | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| One-tap WhatsApp confirmation | Taps Confirm or Cancel in the WhatsApp message | Post-checkout COD confirmation; least effort for the customer | Needs a phone number that is on WhatsApp |
| WhatsApp OTP code | Types a 4-digit code (or taps the verify link) in the verification box | Checking a number before checkout | More steps; some customers give up |
| SMS OTP code | Types a code received by SMS | Checking a number before checkout when the customer is not on WhatsApp | On the default sender, SMS reaches Egyptian numbers only |

For post-checkout confirmation, one tap is the better default: the order already exists, so all you need is a clear yes or no from the buyer. Codes make more sense before checkout, in the [Fast Checkout one-page COD form](https://cartsaver.net/help/fast-checkout-with-otp-verification/) or the pre-checkout pop-up, where you are checking that a number is real before an order is created. If your WhatsApp sender cannot send normal OTP codes, Cartsaver tells you in settings and customers verify with the confirmation button instead.

About SMS: post-checkout confirmation is sent on WhatsApp only, and Cartsaver does not retry a failed WhatsApp confirmation by SMS. SMS codes are available in the before-checkout flows (Fast Checkout and the pre-checkout pop-up), where you also set code expiry and resend timing. If many of your buyers are not on WhatsApp, one of those flows may suit you better. Stores on Scale, Ultra and Elite can connect their own SMS provider and sender name (see the [sender ID guide](https://cartsaver.net/help/sender-id-configuration-guide/)).

## What happens to COD orders nobody confirms?

You choose. When the wait time you set (30 minutes to 24 hours) runs out without a tap, Cartsaver either marks the order high risk in Shopify for your team to review or cancels it automatically. Both are part of Cartsaver’s [fake COD order protection](https://cartsaver.net/help/fake-cod-order-protection/).

This is the part that saves money. In **Pending Order Action** you choose what Cartsaver does when a customer ignores the message:

- **Mark as High Risk**: the order stays active, Shopify shows a high risk level with the note that it was not verified in time, and Cartsaver tags it “Order marked high risk” and “Not verified in X minutes”. You can still call the customer, fulfill or cancel by hand.
- **Auto Cancel**: Cartsaver cancels the order in Shopify and tags it “Order cancelled”, so it never reaches your packing queue.

The **wait time** runs from 30 minutes to 24 hours (in 30-minute steps, with presets at 30 min, 1, 2, 6, 12 and 24 hours). The countdown starts when the confirmation message is sent, not when the order is placed, so a delayed message still gets the full wait. You can also switch the pending action off and handle unconfirmed orders yourself.

If the order was only marked high risk, a late tap on Confirm still verifies it. Once Cartsaver has cancelled the order, a late tap no longer changes it. If a real customer comes back after that, open the order in Shopify and use the Cartsaver block on the order page to mark it verified, or open a WhatsApp chat with them from the same block.

### When the customer taps Cancel

**Customer Cancelled Action** is a separate setting with the same two choices: flag the order as high risk for review, or cancel it in Shopify. Either way the order is tagged “Customer cancelled order” and “Cancelled via WhatsApp”. If you never pick a cancel action, Cartsaver uses your Pending Order Action choice.

## What you see in Shopify

You do not need to open Cartsaver to know where an order stands. Each step writes to the Shopify order:

| Event | Shopify risk level | Order tags added |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Confirmation sent | Pending | None yet |
| Customer confirms | None (positive note) | Contact verified by OTP, Verified via WhatsApp |
| Customer taps Cancel | High | Customer cancelled order, Cancelled via WhatsApp |
| No answer before the wait ends | High (or the order is cancelled) | Verification timeout, Not verified in X minutes, Order marked high risk or Order cancelled |

Because these are standard Shopify tags and risk levels, you can filter your orders list by them, and your courier or fulfillment app sees the same information. Cartsaver also fires three Shopify Flow triggers (customer confirmed via WhatsApp, customer requested cancellation, and verification timeout), so you can build your own follow-ups, such as notifying your team in a shared channel.

## Settings that change the result

### Confirmation message delay

You can send the WhatsApp confirmation **immediately** or after **1, 6, 12, 24 or 48 hours**. A short delay gives impulse buyers time to change their mind before you ask, which reduces refusals at the door. The thank-you page tells the customer when to expect the message. Match the delay to how often you ship: immediate for same-day dispatch, 12 or 24 hours if you pack once a day.

### Auto-fulfill confirmed orders

Off by default. When on, a confirmed order is fulfilled in Shopify right away. Turn it on only if your fulfillment really starts from Shopify’s fulfilled status. If you also send [order update messages](https://cartsaver.net/help/order-notifications-keep-customers-informed/), use the “Order Created” notification rather than “Order Fulfilled”, so the customer does not get a shipping message the second they confirm.

### WhatsApp countries you choose

By default WhatsApp verification accepts phone numbers from every supported country. You can limit it to the countries you deliver to, so numbers from elsewhere are not accepted for WhatsApp verification. This is useful if you only ship inside Egypt, Saudi Arabia or the UAE.

### Language and an extra line of your own

Messages follow the customer’s checkout language, or you can force all messages to English or Arabic. In **Additional info** you can add up to 400 characters, such as your delivery window or support hours, to the confirmation and the order created message. The text is reviewed against WhatsApp’s policies and goes out once it is approved.

## How do you set up WhatsApp order confirmation?

Install Cartsaver, select WhatsApp Order Confirmation as your checkout flow, add the Cartsaver block to the Thank you and Order status pages, choose WhatsApp as the verification method, then pick your delay and pending order actions. Setup takes about a minute; finish with a test COD order.

1. Install Cartsaver from the [Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/cartsaver-otp-cod?utm_source=cartsaver.net) and start on the Free plan, no credit card needed (see the [installation guide](https://cartsaver.net/help/installation-setup-guide/)).
2. Go to **Settings → Checkout Flow** and select **WhatsApp Order Confirmation**.
3. Click **Add Widgets** and add the Cartsaver block to **both** the Thank you page and the Order status page in the Shopify checkout editor, then click Save.
4. Go to **Settings → Global Configuration** and select **WhatsApp** as a verification method.
5. Choose your confirmation delay, Pending Order Action, wait time and Customer Cancelled Action.
6. Place a test COD order with your own phone number and tap Confirm.

For every option on that screen, see the [WhatsApp Order Confirmation settings](https://docs.cartsaver.net/configuration/whatsapp-order-confirmation/) in the Cartsaver docs.

## A worked example

A fashion store in Cairo ships once a day at 2 pm. It sets the confirmation delay to 1 hour, Pending Order Action to Mark as High Risk, and the wait time to 12 hours. An order placed at 9 pm gets its WhatsApp message at 10 pm. The customer confirms at 8 am, the order is tagged Verified via WhatsApp, and it goes out at 2 pm. A second order placed with a wrong number never gets a tap; at 10 am the next day Shopify shows it as high risk with “Not verified in 720 minutes”, and the team skips it. After a few weeks of checking flagged orders by hand, the store switches to Auto Cancel.

## Common mistakes

- **Adding the widget to only one page.** Add it to both the Thank you page and the Order status page, or customers who come back later will not see the confirmation box.
- **Starting with Auto Cancel.** Begin with Mark as High Risk for a week or two, look at what gets flagged, then decide.
- **A wait time shorter than your customers’ day.** Thirty minutes is tight for an order placed late at night. Several hours is kinder to real buyers.
- **Auto-fulfill with an Order Fulfilled message.** The customer gets a “shipped” message seconds after confirming. Use Order Created instead.
- **Running out of messages.** Each confirmation uses a WhatsApp message from your plan (10 a month on Free, up to 60,000 on Elite for stores in Egypt, India and Pakistan, and up to 8,000 elsewhere). Check the [pricing table](https://cartsaver.net/#pricing) against your monthly COD orders.

Once orders are confirmed, the same WhatsApp conversation can carry more: [one-tap cross-sells after confirmation](https://cartsaver.net/help/beyond-verification-how-to-turn-every-cod-confirmation-into-an-upsell-opportunity/), order updates and review requests. See the full list in the [WhatsApp Order Verification feature breakdown](https://cartsaver.net/#feature-cod-verification).

## Frequently asked questions

### Does WhatsApp order confirmation change my Shopify checkout?

No. Customers check out exactly as before. Cartsaver adds a block to the thank-you and order status pages and sends the WhatsApp message after the order is created.

### What if the customer does not have WhatsApp?

The WhatsApp message will not reach them, and the order follows your Pending Order Action when the wait time ends. Call high-risk orders before deciding, or, if many of your buyers are not on WhatsApp, use Fast Checkout or the pre-checkout pop-up, which can verify by SMS code (on the default sender, SMS reaches Egyptian numbers).

### Can the customer cancel the order from WhatsApp?

Yes. The message has a Cancel button. Cartsaver then flags the order as high risk or cancels it in Shopify, depending on your Customer Cancelled Action setting.

### Are the messages sent from an official WhatsApp account?

Yes. Cartsaver sends through Meta’s official WhatsApp Business API, not WhatsApp Web automation. On Scale, Ultra and Elite you can send from your own WhatsApp Business number. Read [why the official API matters](https://cartsaver.net/help/official-whatsapp-api-vs-unofficial-workarounds-why-your-business-number-is-at-risk/).

### Does it work outside Egypt?

Yes. WhatsApp confirmation works for any country you allow in WhatsApp countries, and messages can go out in English or Arabic. Stores in the Gulf, Pakistan, India and elsewhere use the same flow.

### Do customers have to opt in before I send WhatsApp order messages?

Meta’s WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy says businesses may only message people who gave them their phone number and opt-in permission. Cartsaver messages the number the customer entered on their own order, about that order, and does not add a separate opt-in checkbox. Tell customers at checkout or in your privacy policy that order confirmations come on WhatsApp.
